Sheath and udders cleaning
In Nature, wild horses are able to clean themselves trough several actions like breeding. As we domesticated them we have to take on caring for them. They don’t have hands but we do!!
Sheath and udders cleaning should be done once to twice a year and usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes for a compliant animal to up to 2h for an anxious one.
Horses should be desensitized early but it’s not impossible to work on a scared horse. We often see horses being anxious and with difficult behaviour when starting the clean up and relaxing towards the end of it as they often really need it.
In order to clean the horses and depending on their needs, I use coconut oil in order the soften and break down smegma (and also to nourish the skin) and then use either a sheath cleaning soap or Ivory soap to break the oils. Finally I use warm water to rince. As the cleaning go any finds will be noted and discussed with the owner or the person in charge of the horse.
To help with relaxation and specifically for anxious horses, I may use essential oil and treats, with the owner’s permission.
